On January 1, 2009, the qualified bicycle commuting reimbursement was added to the list of qualified transportation fringe benefits covered in section 132 (f) of the Internal Revenue Service Code for commuting by bike at least 3 times a week for a substantial portion of the travel between residence and place of employment. Reimbursement per month is up to $20. and includes bike lock, helmet, bike parking facilities, etc.
EMPLOYER PARTICIPATION/IMPLEMENTATION IS REQUIRED. Talk to your employer and let them know you would like to take advantage of this credit. If there are other commuters in your office advocate as a group of interested cyclists.
The credit may not be large but it is another step/pedal in the right direction. And, with enough support, more benefits may be realized down the road. Meanwhile, you’re doing your part by“going green” and saving natural resources, plus, you’re experiencing a great cardio workout (burn calories, not gas*) and are a more fit employee: physically AND mentally. If your organization is not currently a participate there are transporation providers who may be able to help you. For more information visit:http://www.bikeleague.org/news/100708faq.php
